Free Cancer Awareness education workshops for Key Stage 4. The workshops are intended for year 10 and year 11 students and all the workshop material is in line with the updated PSHE national curriculum with no costs to schools.
The sessions will cover the following:
- Importance of being cancer aware
- Common signs and symptoms of cancer
- Self-checking demonstration of testicles and breasts
- Risk factors of cancer
- Breast and testicular signs and symptoms
- Skin cancer, abnormal moles, and sun safety
- The use of an interactive quiz to gain understanding
As the project is funded by the NHS North East London Cancer Alliance, the tailored workshops can be offered free of charge. By targeting health promotion and prevention messaging at young people, the hope is to not only raise awareness of cancer signs and symptoms that will be of direct benefit to the young people, but to empower them to have conversations with their family and wider networks.
The NEL CA has a remit to improve and transform cancer patient pathways from prevention to end of life care in North East London. A key area of work for NEL CA is in improving awareness of signs and symptoms of cancer across Northeast London. When cancer is diagnosed early it is easier to treat and survival rates are better. Awareness of possible symptoms of cancer and knowing when to seek medical advice are key to early diagnosis.
