Asthma and Allergy Friendly Schools

Jenny Hammond School is the first school who has achieved Asthma and Allergy Friendly Status in Waltham Forest. The council's Public Health team encourage all schools to sign up for Asthma and Allergy Friendly Schools (AAFS). Please see below interview with Diana Williams (Assistant Headteacher, The Jenny Hammond School) which took place on Wednesday 10 April 2024:

'Why did you want The Jenny Hammond School to become Asthma and Allergy Friendly?'

‘We understand the significant impact asthma and allergies can have on pupil’s lives and overall well-being. Being Asthma and Allergy Friendly not only demonstrates a commitment to the health and well-being of our pupils but also signifies a dedication to quality and safety as we want all our staff members to be confident in supporting pupils with asthma to learn effectively at school.’

'How was the process of becoming ‘Asthma and Allergy Friendly?’

‘The process of becoming an Asthma and Allergy Friendly school was fairly straightforward. We had many of the criteria required to become Asthma and Allergy Friendly, already in place e.g. the asthma and allergy register. I felt 100% supported throughout the process, I was confident in emailing any questions through which were responded to very quickly.’

'What are the benefits of being Asthma and Allergy Friendly?'

  • Improved asthma awareness and management in our school setting.
  • Improved support to pupils with asthma encouraging an inclusive environment.
  • Ensures and reassures our school community that we are implementing current and best practice asthma management strategies for their children, reducing absences.

'Would you recommend other schools within Waltham Forest to become Asthma and Allergy Friendly?'

Absolutely! Many schools like ourselves are probably already doing lots and possibly more!
