STARS is Transport for London’s school travel plan accreditation scheme for London schools and nurseries. STARS inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. With three accreditation levels in the STARS programme schools can work towards Bronze, Silver or Gold by completing and participating in a range of activities supported by TfL and the Council.
Over half of London's schools have committed to more active, safe and sustainable travel – you can find out more and join them here
With the support of the Council and TfL, schools can deliver a wide range of active travel and road safety initiatives to encourage pupils and staff to travel actively and sustainable. They can also take part in national events too, such as Walk to School Week, The Big Pedal and Green Transport Week.
Benefits of being STARS accredited and having a School Travel Plan:
Since the accreditation scheme started in 2007, STARS schools' pupils, parents/carers and staff have replaced over 22 million kilometres of car journeys with active travel! That's an incredible step towards a healthier, less congested London. As a STARS school you can expect to see an average 6% reduction in the number of trips made by car to your school; gold and silver accredited schools can see up to 12% reduction.
The cost for this package is free.
Mission Grove Primary School in Waltham Forest have been an exemplar Gold STARS school since 2008. Over 85% of the pupil’s travel to school by walking, cycling, scooting or on public transport; a statistic the school, and Waltham Forest Borough, are very proud of! The School has also participated in national events such as Walk to School Week, The Big Pedal, Road Safety Week and Green Transport Week.
Mission Grove are one of our champion schools, paving the way for schools around Waltham Forest and London to be a part of a healthier, happier city.
