National Poetry Day 2022

National Poetry Day is taking place on 6 October 2022 and the theme for this year is The Environment.

The Local Authority is running an exciting competition to celebrate children and young people’s poetry.

The winning entries will be displayed and used on various promotional materials as part of storytelling events taking place across the borough.

The competition will be divided into three categories:

  • Primary age pupils (including Reception)
  • Secondary age pupils (up to and including Year 11)
  • Pupils in 6th Forms and College

Entries submitted should be a written/typed poem not exceeding 150 words related to The Environment.

We will be selecting 3 winners from each category who will each receive a £50 shop voucher.

To take part in the competition, we are asking Schools and Colleges to submit one entry per category relevant to your school/college.

We are hoping that you will support your children and young people to participate in this competition.

Submissions should include the following:

  • competition category
  • child or young person’s name
  • age
  • school or college name

Submissions can be sent to us via email

All entries must be submitted by Friday 21 October 2022

If for any reason your school/college chooses not to participate in the competition but a child/young person wishes to submit their poetry work independently, we would ask that you signpost them to submit their entry to any of the local libraries across the borough.

The submissions should include:

  • competition category
  • child or young person’s name
  • age
  • Parent/Carer contact details (telephone and email)

Once we have received the submissions from each school/college across each category, the Council’s Storytelling Operational Delivery Group, who are leading on the delivery of the storytelling programme, will cast their vote to pick the winners across each category.

The winners from each category will be contacted by Friday 11 November 2022
