Good Beginnings Programme for 5s

Good Beginnings is an initiative that has been rolled out by NELFT and funded by the local authority over the last year as a pilot project and has now been commissioned to run for the next two years.

Parents who were invited to attend the pilot group were randomly selected from the SACC waiting list.

Parents are currently being invited from the SACC waiting lists and we would welcome parents whose children who are on SACC waiting list to contact us if they would like to attend.

Please send any queries to Imelda or call on 07871794695

The course consists of 2 hourly sessions run over 6 weeks. Currently the sessions run on Wednesdays and they are either in the morning from 10.00 am to 12.00 or the afternoon from 13.00 to 15.00. The times are based on the availability of the venue. NELFT are unable to provide a crèche and therefore the course is parent and carer only. This is a big commitment for any parent/carer, but those families who have attended all the sessions are clear about how much they benefitted from them.

During those 6 weeks the course provides information about the multidisciplinary assessment and in particular; provides information on the diagnoses that may be given following the assessment e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, Social Communication Disorder and/or Global Developmental Delay. It also aims to support and provide parents and carers with strategies they can use with their children prior to the assessment to support their communication. The first 4 weekly sessions are run by the Speech and Language Therapist; weeks 5 and 6 are run by the Educational Psychologist and or the Health Visitor. In these sessions topics such as toileting, feeding, behaviour and education are discussed.

Some comments from parents who attended:

‘I learned how to cope with my child’s additional needs, and to understand even if he is Autistic it’s OK!’

‘I now know how to help get my child’s attention’

‘I found this course extremely helpful, and gained a better understanding of what Autism is’

‘I have used a lot of skills at home’

If parents are not available to attend the session, there is also a digital online offer you can make them aware of.

Not every parent/ carer is going to be able to attend a 6-week course, but to ensure that all parents/carers are able to access some support and information whilst they are waiting for their SAC C appointment.
