Covid-19:Transition to home testing in secondary schools
24 March 2021
Following a number of queries from Headteachers and discussions with colleagues in Public Health, the Council have put together advice regarding pupils and Lateral Flow Tests.
Provision of LFT home test kits - Schools should make every reasonable effort to ensure that pupils receive three lateral flow tests on site assisted / supervised by testing staff in order to improve the accuracy when they transition to home testing. If there is reluctance from the pupil / parent to participate in on site testing, then where possible, schools should support pupils to undertake at least one test on site (i.e. When they collect the home test kits).
Schools may nonetheless determine that where a pupil has not participated in on school site testing or attended a community test site, they do provide them with home testing kits. In doing this they are recognising that this testing is better than pupils not testing at all and in the knowledge that any positive results will require a confirmatory PCR test.
Communication with parents/carers - We are aware that schools and colleges share our desire to maintain the uptake of Lateral Flow Tests as pupils move to home testing. Please download a template communication that Heads/Principals can use as necessary, please also watch out for details of a public Webinar around testing that will be focussed on pupils and their families. We ask that you publicise this in your communities when further details are shared.
For ease of reference please download the form for reporting confirmed cases and our expectations in this regard.
